Born in Glendale, California, Cathy was blessed with an idyllic life in the comfy suburb of Covina. Her stage debut at age 10 was as Helen of Troy in a grade school production of "Arise, Sparta!". Throughout junior high and high school she enjoyed taking part in many drama and musical productions. She also liked keg parties.
At age 17 she and her mother relocated to Seattle, where she finished out her last year of high school. Snubbed by the student body for being a Californian, she spent a lot of time in her bedroom listening to YES through big crappy headphones.
She enrolled into a community college where she studied Criminal Justice, and once again became active in theatre productions. It was during this time she formed an a-cappella act with fellow student Nan Clifford. They called themselves The Sympathy Cards, and took their unusual act from music club stages to comedy club venues. For 4 years they enjoyed success throughout the Northwest comedy circuit and earned a comedy award for Best Use of Music in a Comedy Act.
The Sympathy Cards continue to perform a couple of times a year.
Cathy pursued a solo stand-up career in Seattle during the mid-eighties, sporting a variety of unsavory hair-dos and wearing earrings larger than her own face.
San Francisco was the next stop for Cathy, where she really cut her comedy teeth as a solo performer. At the time the city housed several busy comedy clubs and Cathy garnered lots of attention and favorable reviews, being called "Brilliant But Unheralded" and a "Notable Arrival" by the San Francisco Weekly. Cathy was chosen as the opening acts for high-profile shows such as Joan Jett and Buster Poindexter, and was described in San Francisco Focus Magazine as "the illegitimate child of Groucho Marx and Imogene Coca."
Four years in San Francisco and a nine month, 200-city college tour later, Cathy jumped the puddle to London, England where a healthy stand-up scene was just beginning to blossom. There Cathy took part in pub shows and cabaret venues as well as large shows at theatres like The Hackney Empire, where she was showcased in the annual New Act Of The Year show. Her stand-up was featured in a radio ad for Tampax that was aired throughout the British Isles. Cathy stayed one year in London, then returned to the United States, choosing Seattle as her home base and residence.
The 1990's brought Cathy to the world of television and international comedy festivals. She appeared on shows produced by HBO and Showtime, and developed a pilot with MTV. The U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen said of Cathy "Sorbo rips into her work with such humor and insight that her act appeals to just about everybody."
Cathy's credits also include national voiceover work for radio and television ads as well as performing at corporate events for clients ranging from Microsoft to the U.S. Army.
Cathy has been a regular performer on NPR's news satire show Rewind and is a sideline annoouncer for the Rat City Roller Girls roller derby league.
She is also a columnist for the Saturday Spin section of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
